News from the musical world of Christine Albert and Chris Gage
June 2012

Coming to

Hey and howdy, friends and neighbors, salutations from the MoonHouse in beautiful Austin, Texas,

We are a bit shell shocked after several losses recently. There is not much to say except embrace every day.

The plans for "Albert and Gage's Alpine Adventure Tour" are shaping up and the deadline to sign up has been extended to June 24.  Fans are invited to join us for the Swiss portion of our October European tour.  This nine day trip (October 13-22 - including the travel days to and from Zurich), will feature plenty of Albert and Gage shows throughout Switzerland, sightseeing with an emphasis on a non-touristy experience, hanging out with locals, eating great food, touring a winery, visiting a watchmaking museum, etc. We need commitments by June 24 in order to confirm that the trip has enough folks to go on (we are currently 4 short, so we're close).  Deposits will not be due until it's all set.  Details can be found here.

We're posting photos this month of our closest personal losses.  It's been a grief stricken couple of weeks, for sure.  Chris' mother Darleen Gage, Chris' Uncle Fuzz, folksinger and Troupe's second mom Caryl P. Weiss, and Sioux Falls SD rock God Dennis Westphal.  Y'all take care of each other up there, okay?

My mom, Darleen, passed away on June 2, 2012.
She was a great inspiration to me all my life and I've so enjoyed having her close by the last couple of years.  CG

As always, thanks for the support and happy summer to you,
Chris and Christine

A note from Christine:

This time last week we were sitting vigil for Chris's mom. We have grown very close over the last 16 years, but especially since she moved here to Texas two years ago. It was a privilege to be there for her as she transitioned from this world to the next. There were no words left unsaid...I sang her favorite songs several times...her children were by her side and I know she felt loved. It is hard to say goodbye, for sure, but I am happy that she has been released into her next journey.
An hour after Darleen passed, I said goodbye to my old friend Caryl P. Weiss over the phone. She was diagnosed with cancer just 6 weeks ago and I had plans to go see her in Annapolis later this month. Caryl was a part of our family when my son Troupe was growing up. She has been very special to him and taught him his first guitar chords, took him on cool outings to NASA and car shows. She had a wry and mischievous sense of humor and challenged him to see the world from an unexpected perspective. She was curious and interested in history, folk music, sailing ships, sea shanties, MGs, airplanes. In addition to being a multi-instrumentalist and gifted songwriter, she was a Major in the Civil Air Patrol, served in the U.S. Coastguard Auxiliary and was commissioned by Governor Ann Richards as an Admiral in the Texas Navy...an ideal quirky aunt for a young boy.
Farewell Darleen and Caryl - I am richer for having had you in my life.
     Love, Christine

  And a blurb from Chris:
Of course I knew it was coming.  "Dragons live forever, but not so little boys".  It's very hard to watch a parent round the final bend.  My mom was occasionally strict and a little controlling, but usually with a twinkle in her eye.  My bands could always pull up at her house in a van or a school bus and charge in to the kitchen for something to eat.  It was usually caramel rolls, chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal cookies.  Being a life long South Dakotan, her freezer usually had a supply of pheasant and walleye, the main diet of her hunting and fishing neighbors who would always share part of their bounty.
When Alzheimer's started stealing her brain, she was unusually aware and spent a couple years preparing before we even knew it.  She gave away all her stuff, she stopped using dangerous knives, stopped cooking on the stove, and found her own way to the first assisted living apartment at Parkwood in Pierre.  A short stay there proved she needed more help, so a bunch of us worked like crazy to get her moved to Texas.  The biggest hurdle, we thought, would be to get her to leave her beloved South Dakota.  She was thankfully too thrilled to be living close to family to worry too much about it.
I posted a touching Christmas video for her year before last.  Watch it if you'd like here.  She was confused, but quite happy.
     See you at the gig.
     Chris
