News from the musical world of Christine Albert and Chris Gage
March 2013

Hey and howdy, friends and neighbors, salutations from the MoonHouse in beautiful Austin, Texas, where the oak trees are preparing to dump their nasty green "worms" of pollen all over every car in town.

We have survived our travel season.  We spent a week in Belize with Jerry Jeff and Susan Walker, we spent a week in Los Angeles devouring all the glitz and glamour that we enjoy thanks to Christine's work as Vice Chair of the National Board of Trustees of the Recording Academy, Chris enjoyed an overnighter to Aspen complete with lobster corn dogs, and our new cat Yoda has started venturing outdoors, losing his nice collar and tag on his very first outing.  Wow, the excitement that is our life here in Austin.

This month's photo essay is from Belize.  We stay on the island of Ambergris Caye, and it couldn't have been more relaxing.  It rained for 3 days and was sunny for 3 days.  The prevailing winds arrived and filled the house with incredible salt water breezes right of the barrier reef.  Click here to watch Chris' film "Down In Belize".  Click here for a photo tour from Switzerland.  Click here for a ten minute video glimpse of our Swiss trip.

Thanks for making Valentine's Day at El Mercado quite special.  We're back to work.  Donn's Depot this Saturday with the band, Central Market in Austin on Friday the 8th, Camp Street Cafe in Crockett on the 29th, Easter Sunday sunrise service at Rolke Ranch and Chris helps Jerry Jeff Walker celebrate his birthday at the Paramount Theater and Gruene Hall.  Come see us!

"The ladies were the high scorers at fishing...and trivial pursuit"
(Christine Albert, Susan Walker, Lisa Pankratz)

As Mr. Gage was getting out of the water by the dock, Brad Fordham (always with his mask on) noticed that there was a poisonous lionfish or two hanging out by the steps.  A couple days later this nice scuba guide came over and speared that sucker.  Ya mon!  Close call.

We had to stop here and test all the local rum creams for our coffee.

A note from Christine:
Looking at Chris's pictures transports me to Belize.  The soundtrack to our week there this time was like a meditation/relaxation app - surf, rain, wind.  We shifted to an early to bed, early to rise schedule effortlessly.  Our bodies seemed to jump at the chance to be more in sync with the natural world around us.
Of course, a week later we were deep into the LA nightlife of GRAMMY week and eased right back into our card carrying night owl status.
When we returned home, I enjoyed taking all that rest and all that glamour and singing my heart out on Valentine's night.  El Mercado did a great job of transforming into a bistro and the food was excellent.  By the way, this October 11 marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of the great Edith Piaf.  Watch for some kind of special French show from Madame Albert - I don't think I can resist that.
I had the opportunity to be part of Texas GRAMMY Music Day at the Texas State Capitol this week.  About 30 of us met with policy makers to lobby for economic development and support for arts education in public schools.  It was a gratifying experience and I look forward to doing the same thing at GRAMMYS on the HILL in DC in April.
This will be a month of Texas gigs and some Recording Academy travel to Philly and LA for me and then some southeast shows in April, as well as a concert in Herndon, VA.  Looking forward to that!  Louisiana, Florida and DC area here we come.
     Love, Christine

Nakia and Christine

  And a blurb from Chris:
It's good to be home, although the winter travels were better than usual this year.  October in Switzerland and Germany, January in Belize, then the Grammys in Los Angeles.  I often tell people we don't travel much anymore, but then I look back at where I've been... I'm very thankful for the opportunities and the safe travel we've had.
Now it's back into the studio for me.  Finishing a new jingle for Austin's iconic ABC Home and Commercial Services (formerly ABC Pest and Lawn).  They've always had the coolest TV spots featuring an anteater, and we've updated their signature jingle with Christine's son Troupe on vocals and me on instruments.  It should hit the airwaves pretty soon.
We had an interesting evening at the Grammys.  We attended a MusiCares benefit with Bruce Springsteen as the guest of honor.  Before the music started they were auctioning off an electric guitar to pull a little more money out the tuxedoed audience.  Even with on the spot autographs by Sting, Elton John, Emmylou Harris and others the bidding stalled at $55,000.  Bruce (Broooooooce) would have none of it.  He jumped up, grabbed the guitar and kept sweetening the deal till it hit $250,000!  The winning bidder received the guitar, an hour long lesson from Mr. Springsteen, 8 backstage passes, a ride in Bruce's Harley sidecar, and lasagna made fresh by his mother!!  This all happened right at our table.  Very cool.
     See you at the gig!
     Chris

Lunch with our incredible hosts at the Victoria House.  Yes, those are the best pina coladas on the planet.

A group hug at the end of the week.  Good music, good times.
