Albert and Gage e-Newsletter May 2010
please visit our website albertandgage.com
Greetings from the MoonHouse in lovely south
Austin, Texas.
The oak trees have completed their messy spring
cycle of leaves and green fuzz (all Austin cars have a green tint in March and
April), the chance of a late frost is virtually nil, tomatoes and peppers are
reaching for the sky, winter onions are seeding out and ready for the fridge to
survive the summer, and our giant agave century plant is blooming with an
asparagus-like stalk that's growing at least a foot per day! Our bass
player and pal David Carroll has taken it upon himself to try and rid our back
40 of rampant bamboo. It's fighting back, popping up in a circle around
each work area. Aaargh. Garden pictures are
online here, if you'd like to follow along.
It's a busy month for us, lots of shows and
sessions and trips. Christine heads to Florida and California (good
routing...) while Chris locks himself in the studio with artists including Casey
Yeager, Bob Livingston, Lesli Wood and Sarah Smith.
Christine is also launching a new tradition this month - "Second Wednesday with
Christine" at Artz Rib House in
Austin. Artz has the best ribs in the state and is one of south Austin's
favorite music venues. Christine will be joined by David Carroll on
upright bass and the legendary Paul Glasse
on mandolin. Paul played with Christine for nine years and has been a part
of the French band for decades now! You can expect to hear French music,
old songs of Christine's, eclectic covers and maybe even a few A&G songs.
Don't forget you can still find Chris at the
Donn's Depot piano every Monday
night with a cavalcade of stellar musicians who stop by to share a song or two.
We hope to see you out and about. Our music
is available at MoonHouse Records,
and video is streaming at Albert and Gage.
In the coming days we will be posting a new recording of "Wings of War", the
song we wrote with Steve Brooks about Christine's uncle - Richard A. Albert -
who died during World War II. It will be available to download for free
throughout the month of May, in honor of Memorial Day. The
Wings of War Page will
contain not only the song, but links to a video that is in the works, an article
that Christine is writing, news about the Albert and Gage performance in
Wangford, England on October 9, etc. It will evolve throughout the month,
so check back often. Thanks for your patience. Our plates are full
but we are determined to get this song out there this month. In addition
to Ms. Albert's vocals, the recording features Brad Fordham on bass, Steve
Samuel on drums, David Carroll on background vocals and Chris Gage on everything
else.
Thanks again for your
support.

A note
from Christine:
Last month I wrote that I had just returned from
moving Chris's mom to an assisted living facility in South Dakota.
Today I have just returned from Florida where we are preparing my
folks for a move to live with my sister and her husband. I'll
be back there for ten days in May so Chris will cover a Donn's gig
without me. Thanks again honey! From there I go straight
to a Trustee meeting for The
Recording Academy in California, so I will miss two weeks of
Austin's May glory. Hopefully I'll get to see the agave bloom,
but if not I know that Chris will keep me informed with his iPhone.
I've been going through things with both Chris's mom
and my parents and I love hearing the stories and the history of
certain items - for instance, the three feet tall brass candlesticks
from my grandparents. My dad just told me that my grandfather
bought them straight off the ship he was unloading as a teenager for
extra money down at the port in Niagara Falls. Apparently, in
my family things don't fall off the truck, they fall off the ship!
I brought home some
Revere Ware (my dad designed for Revere for 37 years) steel
storage containers that we used for leftovers before the days of
Tupperware and Ziplocks. We probably won't put food in them
but we'll find a spot and they will remind me of my childhood -
which is the beauty of parental hand me downs.
Happy Mother's Day.
Love to all, Christine |

And
a blurb from Chris:
It's been a pleasant spring in Lake
Wobegon. Wait, I mean Austin, Texas. It's been cool
enough to dine outside. We have nice little outdoor tables
here at the house and at the studio. When studio bands take a
break, they want to eat, and it better not be too healthy! One
of the joys of our neighborhood is the abundance of local take out
food within a mile or two from us.
Brian Langlinais had a
soul band in the studio a week or two ago, and the usual pizza and
tacos ideas were being yawned at, so I sent someone down to
El Pollo Rico on Stassney
and South First. You drive through a little shack drive thru
and order "pollo entero", whole chicken. Wow. Charcoal
chicken that comes with corn tortillas, rice and beans, grilled
whole onions, limes and 2 of the finest hot sauces in Texas...all
for 13 bucks! Then you get good and greasy in the tiki hut
dining area of MoonHouse
Studio. In the springtime it's perfection, in
August...well, you want to do something else.
Christine's off to help her parents get settled in new
digs, and we'll have a chance to check in on my mom when
Red Willow Band plays
in Sturgis SD on June 26. This month sends a happy happy
birthday to my dad (May 14) and my incredible sister Patty (May 15).
Happy birthday to you! Happy Mother's Day to Darleen, Phyllis,
Betty, Loretta, Gwen and Christine!
See you at the gig.
