News from the musical world of Christine Albert and Chris Gage
MAY 2013

Hey and howdy, friends and neighbors, salutations from the MoonHouse in beautiful Austin, Texas, where the oak trees have finally relaxed, the tomatoes are about to flower, pears are forming on the tree and radishes will be gracing our salad bowl in the the next week or two.  Oh, and a first....we have tiny pomegranates.

Yoda came back!  After 5 sad days (for us, maybe not for him) the rainstorms subsided and young Yoda showed up at the side door as if we were crazy for doubting him.  Being a teenager who had run away from home, he's been grounded ever since and we're keeping him in the house.  He's gotten huge and wants to go out, but so far we've haven't felt the need to trust him.  Look at the size of his paws...he's still growing.

We spent two incredible days in Washington, D.C. participating in "Grammys On The Hill", advocating for performers' and creators' rights to several Representatives and Senators on "the hill".  Daryl Freidman, Chief Advocacy & Industry Relations Officer for The Recording Academy, asked us to bring our guitars to spice things up and it sure did.  At one point we had a gospel rave-up with Yolanda Adams singing along and Latin percussion superstar Sheila E. banging on a wastebasket.  The photos this month will give you a sense of our experience in DC.  We were honored to sit with Dr. James Billington, Librarian of Congress, at the dinner recognizing the Library of Congress and Ms. Jennifer Hudson.  Next time we promised ourselves we will spend an extra couple of days and tour the Library.

It's a month of studio sessions (for him), Grammy calls and trips to LA (for her), Monday night shows at El Mercado (her) and Donn's Depot (him), several Jerry Jeff Walker shows (him again) and a special Albert and Gage band appearance in downtown Austin for the Musicians Union on Mother's Day. This Wednesday (May 1) is First Wednesday at Donn's Depot and we'd love to see some of you come out for the show.

It was fascinating to get into the depths of the building.

Our group included executives, artists, songwriters and one feisty lobbyist, Diane Blagman.

Classy place.

A note from Christine:
The morning Yoda came home I was hard at work on our taxes at the kitchen table.  Our cat Chippy and I heard the strangest howling sound outside.  As I leapt up, I thought - 'could it be?' - but I didn't really have enough time to even complete the thought.  I opened the door and Yoda came bounding in - a purring, ecstatic blur of white and gray headed straight to the food bowl.  Running upstairs and waking Chris with the news was one of the coolest moments of my life.  It felt like Christmas morning!  It had been a sad week - the passing of three people within our circle - and losing Yoda made it all that much more painful.  His return gave us a glimmer of the hope we were desperately trying to find.
This week was one of the best Mystery Mondays ever.  If you haven't been - and you're in Austin - you have to join us sometime.  Redd Volkaert on guitar was outstanding.  He's truly one of a kind.  Jimmie Dale Gilmore sang a few and my son Troupe sat in as well.  Chris and I met via Jimmie and he was part of our wedding ceremony ten years ago May 10th.  I felt surrounded by people I love and getting to make music with a bunch of them was the icing on the cake.  Spending time with my dear friend Sarah Elizabeth every week is one of the best perks of the gig...not to mention my "brother" David Carroll.  All I'm saying is, thanks Austin, for supporting this idea and helping to turn it into a new tradition in a town full of amazing weekly gigs.  And we get to top it off with Chris at Donn's. :-)

     Love, Christine

  And a blurb from Chris:
Yeah, the cat came home.  We had about given up on him.  I'm so glad.  Now I have a reason to go back to Costco...(he only likes wet food, and eats it by the case).
I'll be a mixing engineer most of this month.  Once all the musical instruments and vocals have been recorded it's time to switch gears and dive back into the sound and feel of each individual part, tweaking them with equalization, compression, reverb and delay, and try to get them into a stereo soundstage that's powerful but still pleasing to the ear.
Everyone has a different take on this...I just make it sound right to me, and then make any changes necessary for the artist to be happy with the sound.  Need some studio time? Email me.
Both records I'm currently mixing, Frank Cavitt and Butch Morgan, were recorded in a semi "live" setting in the studio.  The musicians were playing at the same time in isolated rooms with headphones on so they can hear what the other player is doing. There were some awesome musical moments and I think they'll both be happy with the results.
I've missed several Jerry Jeff Walker shows while on tour with the lovely Christine Albert, so it'll be fun to get back into his swing of things.  His shows at Gruene Hall are cool, they're always sold out with a dancehall packed to the gills of hardcore JJW fans.  When they all start singing "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother"....it's a sight to behold.

     See you at the gig!
     Chris
