News from the musical world of Christine Albert and Chris Gage
MAY 2014

Hey and howdy, friends and neighbors, salutations from the MoonHouse in beautiful Austin, Texas where spring has sprung, there's tiny little pears on the tree and a row of Hee Haw corn growing in a raised bed.  Salute!

We had a unique musical experience the other night.  We were asked to perform 3 songs with the Central Texas Medical Orchestra and it was very moving.  Fletch Wiley wrote beautiful arrangements for "What Am I To You", "Everything's Beautiful Now" and the French polka "Mon a Manege a Moi".  How joyful to be singing with violins, oboes and tympani drums swirling around our voices.   The orchestra is conducted by Dr. Robert Alan Radmer and the other soloist was the incredible cellist Francesco Mastromatteo.  Thanks for a great night, you guys.

This week Mr. Gage begins his weekly residency "Chris Gage and Friends" at Strange Brew Lounge Side Wednesdays at 6 pm. The special guest this week is long time friend Marvin DykhuisMystery Monday at El Mercado (we call it Elmer....) launches a hot new chapter with guest co-host Bill Kirchen, a killer guitarist from the old Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen days.  Bill will be co-hosting with Christine for the month of May.  Of course, Chris is still hosting Monday Night at Donn's Depot.

We're gearing up for a summer tour to Colorado and South Dakota, so there's some prairie photos for you to enjoy.

As always, thank you for the support...
Chris and Christine

A note from Christine

My notes here have been short or non-existent lately as my life gets busier.  I hope you know that the support and feedback we receive from all of you out there in "newsletter-land" keep us fueled with inspiration and the energy to carry on with this musical journey.
The new Christine Albert CD is well underway, with the official release in early September.  Chris and I are producing it together and as usual the maestro is doing a masterful job.  It has its own sound that has evolved organically based on the songs and the theme.  I love it when a project finds its voice and takes on a life of its own.  Carving out time to create has given me much needed balance.
I am almost one year into my two year term as Chair of The Board of Trustees of The Recording Academy and it continues to be very gratifying work.  Today I'll be on a monthly call with the 12 Chapter Presidents from around the country; tomorrow is our monthly Executive Committee call; Thursday I'll be in LA for a Finance Committee meeting; later this month I'll chair the bi-annual Board of Trustees meeting in LA; in the last month I was in LA for meetings with the Planning and Governance and Membership Committees.  There!  People always say -"what exactly do you do as Chair when it's not GRAMMY season?" This is a snapshot of my role.  Do you see why this songbird loves to get on stage or in the studio these days?
Swan Songs continues to grow and thrive.  The organizational knowledge I have gleaned from my work with the Academy is serving me well as I incorporate the practices and professionalism into guiding Swan Songs to the next level.  There are some exciting developments that you will hear about in the coming months.
Chris and I celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary on May 10 at Donn's Depot and continue the party on Mother's Day, May 11 at The Great Outdoors.  Mystery Monday has turned into one of my favorite musical experiences ever and I'm looking forward to a Central Market show at the end of the month.

Have a wonderful month of May!
Love, Christine

  And a blurb from Chris

I had to read Christine's note to see what she's been up to!    ...not really, we communicate very well, we've just been pulled in a lot of different directions lately.
I run from the studio to another studio, then to a gig, then to the store for cat food, then home to catch a little tv and rest to get up and do it all again.  It's a good life, and I've chosen it with eyes wide open.
You've seen the announcements about my new weekly performance at a new Austin venue, Strange Brew Lounge Side.  It's become a really cool place to play...some bands are doing afternoon matinees, some are doing concert sets in the evening.  The musicians and the audience change over about every 2 hours, so there's a real chance to see a lot of great Austin talent.  I'm honored that the owner called and offered me a nice time slot (Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 pm).  That's right, he called ME! I didn't have to beg or nothin' for a new gig.  Must be doing something right.  I've always loved playing in bands, but don't really love a rehearsed set, so the format will be mostly band oriented, with a new Strange Brew Friend coming in every week to keep us on our toes.  In the middle of the show I'm going to sit down and do a couple solo numbers that I've developed in my 18 years of Monday nights at Donn's Depot.  Please come see me.
We're heading to Las Vegas in a couple weeks for a rare Gage family reunion.  It's my Dad's 90th birthday and my little sister Patty's #@#th birthday.  They usually celebrate together, and this time they've invited the whole dang family to dinner.  I don't see my big brothers very often, so I'm looking forward to it, even though they both make me feel like I'm still a punk kid who knows absolutely nothing.  Could be in my head?  Probably so, they're nice guys.
Happy Mother's Day, happy anniversary, Christine, happy birthday Dad and Patty, and a joyous spring season to you all.

See you at the gig,
Chris
