September 2011

Greetings from the MoonHouse in hot hot hot south Austin, Texas

Another couple weeks and the the record breaking heat spell in Texas could finally come to end.  We've been in the 100s for 75 days.  Chris got a short break from the heat in Portland and Salt Lake City with Jerry Jeff, and Christine's been staying indoors....

The last few weeks have been challenging ones for us; Christine was home recovering from a surgical procedure when her dear father, John Landreth Albert, passed away on August 18th.   Farewell to a very fine man.  Christine had the honor of writing her father's obituary and we will join the family in Florida for a celebration of his life on September 2nd.  Welcoming a grandson and losing a parent this summer is confirmation that we are indeed in our "middle years" and that time stops for no one - better embrace every moment.  Christine would like to thank everyone for their loving support this past month.

September sees us getting back into the swing of things at Donn's Depot, Urban Campfires in San Antonio, and a special appearance at Momo's on Sept. 4.   Chris was recently honored with the award of "Musician of the Year" from the Academy of Texas Music for his work on Bob Livingston's "Gypsy Alibi" CD.  We'll join the other Austin winners for an evening of celebration at Momo's.  View the poster here

Mark your calendars now for a Swan Songs fundraiser featuring Jerry Jeff Walker at The Gibson Showroom in Austin, Texas on Wednesday, October 19th.  This is a rare opportunity to hear Jerry Jeff in an intimate venue and to support Christine's non-profit that fulfills musical last wishes in central Texas.  Visit the Swan Songs events page to order your tickets.

In case you missed it...
each month we feature a few links to past reviews, current interesting tidbits, creative playscapes of our own or others...just some stuff you may have missed as the world swiftly spins.

Jerry Jeff Walker - Down in Belize

A beautiful collection of video clips from Jerry Jeff's home on the island of Ambergris Caye, Belize, and the neighboring town of San Pedro.

Chris' latest short film is a collection of street musicians filmed during travels in the US and abroad.  There's a young gymnast on the streets of Memphis, "Ave Maria" performed on the streets of Dresden by a classical trio, an incredible duo of violin and piano performed by marionettes in Galway, Ireland and a blues singing dog.

A note from Christine:
As you can imagine, I am a bit shell shocked.  My body was already going through a trauma and now my heart is broken and in need of healing too.
I am grateful that I was home and in a very quiet, contemplative place for the last weeks of my father's life.  As he was growing weaker and more still in Florida, I was here on my couch - keeping the candles lit, holding him in my "prayer heart", staying in constant touch with my family and sending him all my love.  I was able to focus and be present with him from afar, free from the distractions of busy-ness, travel, meetings and gigs.  We knew in the last 24 hours that he was close to crossing over and my sister asked me if I would like to write his obituary.  In 1989, when my son was a year old, I took the time to interview my father, mother and grandmother individually so that I would have a record of their lives and our history - in their own words.  I spent the last day of my dad's life listening to that tape, crying and writing.  I felt like we were taking a look back together and I am sure that he had the same sense that I did - his was a life well lived.  His devotion to my mother and us kids was his foundation; his sense of humor and way with a pun framed his perspective and taught us about the joy of words; his unconditional love for me is a gift that I can only repay by loving as whole heartedly as he did.
A dear friend sent me a sympathy card and said "He helped build your foundation and you are a rock, dear girl.  His job is done."  It made me weep because I know she's right.  His job is done but his influence lives on.  I only hope I can be the rock that Katy thinks I am.  Thank you for the vote of confidence, my friend.
     One day at a time.
     I love you, Daddy.

  And a blurb from Chris:

A picture is worth a thousand words...

See you on the other side, John Albert.
